Top Reasons Adults Return to School

Thursday, April 26, 2012 by Adult Programs

If you listened to the voice that keeps saying, "go back to school," you would have earned nine credits in the last fifteen weeks attending class just one night per week at the University of Indianapolis School for Adult Learning.  Why do adults decide to return to school?

  1. Better Future: Adults realize that a bachelor degree is important to help them have the life they want.
  2. Better Job:  A bachelor's degree is valued in the workplace. Adults realize moving up in their career can be accomplished with the bachelor degree.
  3. Life Change:  Many times a life change such as death of a spouse, divorce, or becoming an empty-nester means there is a need and often the time to return to school.
  4. Set an Example:  Adults realize that it is difficult to encourage their children to go to college if they have not gone to school themselves.
  5. Lifelong Dream:  There is no better reason to return to school. The sense of accomplishment an adult feels when he/she reaches the goal of graduating from college is tremendous.

If you are ready to earn a degree, contact Laurie Daeger, Admissions Advisor in the School for Adult Learning, at ldaeger@uindy.edu or 317-788-3442.  The SAL staff is ready to help you every step along the way.

The topics covered in this two-day seminar are:

“Engaging your Workforce to Maximize Results”        Practitioner/Facilitator Sam Thompson Summary:  According to the Gallup Management Journal’s survey on employee engagement, 27% of US workers are engaged, 59% are not engaged and 14% are actively disengaged.  Gallup estimates the US economy loses up to $350 billion per year in productivity as a result of disengaged employees missing work or undermining improvements and results.   In this workshop, participants will explore the role leaders play in employee engagement, review important ideas and techniques to inspire and engage employees, and Identify key actions to implement with employees to get results.

“Strategic Planning: Envisioning & Planning the future” Practitioner/Facilitator Jack McGriffin Summary:  Organizations which have aligned purpose with activity are not only prepared for the future, but will define it.  Changing political, social, economic and environmental forces must be identified and tracked so change is not feared as a threat, but embraced as an opportunity. This workshop is designed to put participants in the position of identifying current driving factors, envision how they may change and influence their organization and respond accordingly.  In a time of stress, economic downturn and uncertainty, this class will use a variety of strategic planning tools and concepts for purposeful, progressive and productive growth.

“Emotional Intelligence”                                                      Practitioner/Facilitator Stacy Alldredge  Summary:  In this workshop participants learn what Emotional Intelligence (EI) is and why, when practiced consciously, it can improve relationships and personal success.  The session will introduce the four domains of EI and the behaviors associated with each domain. Through an assessment completed before the workshop participants will identify strengths and opportunities to grow in the 18 key behaviors of EI.

“Building Trust”                                                                      Practitioner/Facilitator Jack Klemeyer Summary:  According to Stephen R. Covey, “trust is the highest form of human motivation” and is “closely related to different levels of communication” within organizations.    As a supervisor or manager building that trust is critical to the overall effectiveness of the organization as well as the development of interpersonal relationships in the work environment.  Adapted from the book Speed of Trust, Stephen M. R. Covey, this block of instruction will look at the “13 Ingredients of Trust.”

Thinking About Finishing a College Degree?

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 by Adult Programs
Returning to school is a big step for adult students.  Adults bring a mix of emotions to the process.  They are excited, nervous, anxious, and excited again all rolled together.   The learning environment has changed since many adults were in school.  Here are several tips for returning to school.
  • Be able to use a computer even if this means taking an introductory class at a local library or learning center.  Universities expect students to be somewhat proficient when beginning classes.
  • Seek out help at your school such as writing labs, math labs, success centers. If you need help, ask.
  • Don't procrastinate on your assignments. Work on assignments over several days, not the day before it is due.
  • Refresh yourself on citing information.  Plagiarism hasn't changed since you were in school, but the internet has arrived.
  • Realize you are adding another priority in your life, and map out a plan to fit this new priority, school, into an already busy life.
Most importantly students need to know that they can return to school and be successful. .  Getting a college degree can be accomplished one class at a time.  For more information on the Accelerated Degree Evening Program at the University of Indianapolis, visit the UIndy website, www.sal.uindy. edu.

The winter term begins January 16, 2012.  Start the new year with a new plan.
